About Us
Faced with widespread poverty, inadequate government facilities, and a lack of essential medical resources, the 1 million residents of Petén have long been desperate for help. Hospital Shalom was founded by American Christian missionaries to answer their plea.
Today, Hospital Shalom is one of the region’s leading healthcare providers and continues to earn recognition for exceptional care standards, life-changing outcomes, financial sustainability, and spiritual impact.
History & Timeline
When Tim and Doris Spurrier traveled from Canton, Ohio to Guatemala’s Petén region in the early 1990s, they were met with desperation from locals: “Are you the missionaries who will build us a hospital?”
Suffering from economic disparity and inadequate infrastructure, residents of Petén are reluctant to seek treatment in the dismal conditions of government-run hospitals.
Private medical facilities are often out of reach for families who earn just a few dollars per day, and a trip to Guatemala City for better care means a grueling 10-12 hour bus ride.
Hearing God’s call, the Spurriers acted on faith, purchased a small piece of land, and began digging the foundation for the new building by hand. The hospital they envisioned officially opened in 2006. They called it Shalom, meaning God’s peace – nothing broken, nothing lacking.
mission & Vision
To heal the sick, alleviate suffering, and promote wellness, while sharing God’s peace and compassion. Through life-saving medical care and spiritual support, we aim to serve every patient with the love of Christ, ensuring no one is turned away due to their financial situation or background.
A community where every individual, regardless of their location or income, has access to high-quality healthcare. We envision a future where Hospital Shalom continues to be a beacon of hope, offering healing and comfort to the people of Petén while serving as a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and human dignity.
