About Us

A Lifeline Of Care

Hospital Shalom meets critical healthcare needs in the Petén region of Guatemala with services rooted in the compassion of Jesus Christ. It has emerged from humble beginnings to become a lifeline for a population that suffers from some of the most challenging health conditions in Central America.

Faced with widespread poverty, inadequate government facilities, and a lack of essential medical resources, the 1 million residents of Petén have long been desperate for help. Hospital Shalom was founded by American Christian missionaries to answer their plea.

Today, Hospital Shalom is one of the region’s leading healthcare providers and continues to earn recognition for exceptional care standards, life-changing outcomes, financial sustainability, and spiritual impact.

Hospital Shalom and Samaritan's Purse

Hospital Shalom values its vital partnership with Samaritan’s Purse, whose World Medical Mission provides essential doctors, nurses, medical equipment, and resources to support its mission. Together, we bring compassionate care and hope to patients, reflecting God's divine healing power.

History & Timeline

A Journey Of Faith

When Tim and Doris Spurrier traveled from Canton, Ohio to Guatemala’s Petén region in the early 1990s, they were met with desperation from locals: “Are you the missionaries who will build us a hospital?

Suffering from economic disparity and inadequate infrastructure, residents of Petén are reluctant to seek treatment in the dismal conditions of government-run hospitals.

Private medical facilities are often out of reach for families who earn just a few dollars per day, and a trip to Guatemala City for better care means a grueling 10-12 hour bus ride.

Hearing God’s call, the Spurriers acted on faith, purchased a small piece of land, and began digging the foundation for the new building by hand. The hospital they envisioned officially opened in 2006. They called it Shalom, meaning God’s peace – nothing broken, nothing lacking.
